The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the use of sildenafil citrate and dapoxetine (Viagra) in the treatment of premature ejaculation (PE) in men with PE. The study was performed on 940 PE patients, aged 18 to 87 years, suffering from PE. The efficacy and safety data were obtained after a 4-week course of sildenafil citrate and dapoxetine (Viagra) treatment and following dapoxetine administration.
The study was a prospective, randomized, double-blind, single-centre, parallel-group, single-dose, randomized, controlled clinical trial that enrolled 940 patients with PE from the outpatient and community medical units of Al-Nuwayi Hospital, Al-Azhar Medical Center, Cairo, Egypt. Patients were diagnosed with PE based on the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) score, the International Index of Sexual Function (IIEF-30) scores and the International Index ofitement to Prolongation (IIEF-4). All patients had a PE diagnosis (defined as a PE-related sexual dysfunction [≥3] and persistent penile deformity lasting for more than 4 years), and had been treated with the treatment with sildenafil citrate (100 mg/day), dapoxetine (150 mg/day) and their combination with a combination of sildenafil citrate and dapoxetine (25 mg/day) for 2 or 4 weeks. The treatment was started at the start of the study and continued for 5 consecutive days, and the patients were followed up for a total of 10 weeks.
The study had a total of 940 patients. The mean age of the patients was 47 years (range: 26 to 85 years). The mean IIEF scores and the mean IIEF-30 scores were 36.5 (95% CI: 32.1 to 41.6), and 36.8 (95% CI: 29.8 to 42.8) respectively. The mean age of the patients was 47.8 years (range: 27 to 85 years). The most common comorbidities were diabetes mellitus (18.6%), hypertension (12.9%), hyperlipidemia (5.8%), cardiovascular disease (2.8%) and dyslipidemia (1.8%).
Sildenafil citrate and dapoxetine (Viagra) treatment improved the patient’s PE severity and the improvement in the IIEF-30 score compared with the placebo group. Dapoxetine treatment had a positive impact on the IIEF-4 scores, as well as the IIEF-2 scores, and improved the IIEF-3 scores. The efficacy and safety of sildenafil citrate and dapoxetine were confirmed in the study and confirmed in the literature. Therefore, sildenafil citrate and dapoxetine (Viagra) treatment may be a potential alternative for the treatment of PE in this population.
